A lesson in color from mayflowers

Sketching with a friend yesterday, this little bunch of mayflowers was so delicate, so deliciously fragrant…I thought of John Singer Sargent’s watercolors of ladies in white dresses, the dresses painted with every shade of bright pastel light, magic!

When I got home I was sorely disappointed in my attempt so, remembering, “It is just paper- no one will die!”, I got out a heavier pen, reinforced the lines, punched up the colors, and got over the oh-so-precious delicacies of it all. And now it really looks like “I love spring!” rather than a shy little effort. Yet again amazed at the journey a seemingly simple sketch can offer.

About Bobbie Herron

I live surrounded by watercolor brushes and paints, fountain pens, sketchbooks, and journals- often wanting more than anything to write and paint at the same time. 2. It’s lovely to capture the beauty of flowers by sketching them and realizing the pleasure of just doing it no matter what the result will be , btw these look very lovely.

Forge ahead!! Or as my father, the colonel, would say, chest forward, awhile to the rear.

See what I’m the way I am!
